The 11 video games you should play, according to Elon Musk
The 11 video games you should play, according to Elon Musk
Love him, or hate him, Elon Musk seems to know a thing or two about gaming (or gaming badly, according to critics). Even if you disagree with his gaming credentials, he seems to have a genuine love for video games. Musk once claimed he was one of the best at the original Quake, that gaming helps calm him. "Killing the demons in a video game calms the demons in my mind," said the tech CEO to podcast host Lex Fridman when speaking about Diablo IV where he 'cruised through Tier 100 Nightmare Dungeons like a stroll in the park.' True to that, it's said he defeated the stress from his controversial Twitter purchase (later renamed to X) by zoning out on Elden Ring, which he compared to an artwork on X: Elon Musk, most recently has spoken about Diablo IV, and Elden Ring a lot, but what is his top recommendation? The game above all games that Musk would recommend to anyone asking? Elon Musk's biggest gaming recommendation Interestingly enough, Musk was once asked this question, so his answer is the one we have to go on. Worry not, though, we'll list his other recommendations and favourite games afterwards if his main answer doesn't tickle your fancy. When asked the question before, Musk recommended 2016 smash hit Overwatch to an audience. After a period of repeated requests, Musk finally said that he plays Solider 76 as his main character. Following that, Musk took up Torbjorn. He's also VERY fond of Mercy, and according to Musk's biography, his ex, Amber Heard, once dressed up as the Overwatch healer for Musk. Sadly, Overwatch no longer exists, and the online universe of the game was replaced and updated by Overwatch 2 - which hasn't been as well received as the legendary original. Musk's only thought on Overwatch 2 is that he'll 'maybe' return to playing it, which is a long way away from the praise he heaped on the original game. Elon Musk's favourite games Elon didn't stop gaming when Overwatch was replaced though. As mentioned, he enjoyed his time with Diablo IV and Elden Ring immensely, so you can add those two to the list that starts with Overwatch. With Overwatch no longer available in the form Musk recommended, we've got another big shout from the X CEO: Polytopia. Described as 'a turn based civilization strategy game about controlling the map, fighting enemy tribes, discovering new lands and mastering new technologies,' Polytopia is a game that is thought highly of by Musk, and he says it has influenced his strategy when it comes to business. In fact, Musk became quite obsessed with the game. He said it'd teach people, like his brother Kimbal, how to be CEO's themselves - but Musk said had to get rid of it as it was taking up too many 'brain cycles'. It even led to a fight with another ex of his, Grimes, who deeply upset Musk during a Polytopia session when she launched an attack on him despite having agreed to work together. She said it was "it was one of our biggest fights ever," that led to Musk giving Grimes the cold shoulder for an entire day. As for other games, Musk mentioned his fondness for spacecraft launch sim Kerbal Space Program in an old Reddit AMA. The Randian philosophy of Bioshock's Andrew Ryan is thought to be a big influence of Musk, who lists the game series among his favourites, also naming Fallout, Warcraft, Civilization and Mass Effect. He's also spent a bit of time speaking about Saints Row IV, in odd replies to news clips about President Joe Biden. Nintendo games? Musk is a big fan of Super Smash Bros: Ultimate where he plays as Zero Suit Samus Here's the list in full: Overwatch Elden Ring Warcraft Diablo IV Quake Bioshock Civilization series Mass Effect series Fallout series Polytopia Kerbal Space Progam Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Have your say in our news democracy. Key GTA 6 pre-order date 'leaks' ahead of new trailer
Key GTA 6 pre-order date 'leaks' ahead of new trailer
Key pre-order information for Grand Theft Auto 6 has 'leaked' online. Fans cannot wait for the upcoming game and the hype around the upcoming December reveal of GTA 6 shows it, and a pre-order date will enable fans to get their hands on a copy of the game - virtually - while they await release. GTA 6 will be announced by Rockstar Games early next month with a teaser trailer, and then it's a waiting game until fans can put in an order for the new instalment of the popular series - with some pinning their hopes on a 'moon theory' that reveals GTA 6's release date. Fans might not need that though. According to new leaks thanks to Rockstar Universe who have shared a conversation with Argos Support that potentially reveals a key date for GTA 6 - the pre-order date of December 12th. "I have been informed the software Grand Theft Auto VI for the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 will be available to pre-order on December 12, 2023, confirmed to us by the distributors," said the 'Argos Helpers' account. Now, take this with a pinch of salt. There are spelling and grammatical errors, and Rockstar Universe's attempt to double-source the release date with Argos were met with them being told there was not a date for pre-orders: “It is not announced. Once they announce it, then it will be available,” said a spokesperson for the store. For the optimists reading, there are a few things to hold onto. Spelling errors don't discount information from being right, and we know a trailer is coming in early December and that, usually, pre-order information directly follows that first reveal - and if a date had been given accidentally, it's unlikely that it would be given again to anyone asking. However, Rockstar Universe's diligence in confirming the information may put paid to speculation, and the waiting continues. At least we know it's coming, though, and even if the Argos leak was made up by trolls, there's a window of time for that particular 'broken clock' to be correct. Fans will have December 12th in the back of their mind as they await the first details on GTA 6, and if it is revealed before? Then it'll be one big festive treat indeed. indy100 has reached out to Argos for comment. Ex-Rockstar Games developer shuts down blog after huge Vice City zombie game leak
Ex-Rockstar Games developer shuts down blog after huge Vice City zombie game leak
A former Rockstar Games developer has moved to shut down a blog that had revealed some insider information about game development at the company in the 2000's following feedback from Rockstar North via email. Former Rockstar North technical developer Obbe Vermeij opened up in a blog about the development secrets behind Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV. Vermeij, who worked for Rockstar between 1995 - 2009, revealed the development of a GTA 2.5 (to follow the 2D GTA 2) as well as a zombie survival-horror successor-of-sorts to GTA: Vice City, based off of the code of that game. However, before the blog could continue, a post discussing the games was deleted yesterday after Vermeij was contacted by Rockstar: "Today (22 Nov 2023) I got an email from R*North," wrote Vermeij. Apparently some of the OG's there are upset by my blog. I genuinely didn't think anyone would mind me talking about 20 year old games but I was wrong. Something about ruining the Rockstar mystique or something. Anyway, This blog isn't important enough to me to p**s off my former colleagues in Edinburgh so I'm winding it down." Vermeij added further clarity to the situation on X and stated that Rockstar North did not force him to close the blog down, just that it was disliked by former colleagues. There is no telling as to what specifically Vermeij's former colleagues found umbrage with, but Vermeij discussed a lot about the development of early GTA games as well as the cancelled Agent PS3 exclusive and the aforementioned zombie project in a post entitled 'Distractions: Agent & Z.' Rockstar Norther spent a while pogressing the idea of their zombie game - Z. The game, (pronounced zed), would've been built using code from Vice City, based on a push from artists at the company who were fascinated with zombies. Z would've been sent on a Scottish Island with the player repelling constant attacks from the undead, using vehicles to explore. Why didn't it go ahead? Well those working on Z - according to Vermeij - found the idea depressing and focused work on GTA: San Andreas instead. Vermeij also talked about aspects behind the development of GTA 3 and Vice City, and touched on the potential of a GTA 3 LAN game to add multiplayer to the open-world map, an idea that would gestate until it was realised fully in GTA IV. It's a shame that Vermeij has closed his blog posts on the GTA games, as it was genuinely interesting, and the posts that remain aren't as perhaps 'gossipy' in that they don't reveal unknown information, but they still touch on deeper aspects of game development at Rockstar.
