League of Legends Champion Pricing Update Explained

League of Legends is a game that consists of 162 champions, and that roster continues to get larger every year. Since the game's conception, the pricing for champions has followed the same formula.

The only metric that matters for champion pricing with the current system is the age of a character. Riot Games admits in their game update that this is outdated, as they do not release enough characters for price reductions to occur nearly as quickly as they should.

In order to fix the current system and make it more intuitive for new and returning players, Riot has decided to update it on Patch 13.5.

Here is the new pricing system explained.

Instead of focusing on the amount of champions released, Riot has decided that pricing will be based on the amount of seasons a champion has been available. Here are all the new tiers of pricing that players can follow:

  • 450 BE or 260 RP - This tier is designated for champions that are deemed beginner friendly and easy to play. Some champions include Yuumi, Miss Fortune, and Malphite.
  • 1,350 BE or 585 RP - This price range includes champions that are slightly more complex than than the cheapest characters, but their kits are still relatively beginner friendly and fan favorites. Examples include Yasuo, Lucian, and Sett.
  • 3,150 BE or 790 RP - This tier is for characters that Riot deems a higher degree of difficulty, have steeper learning curves, and take longer to find success. Examples include LeBlanc, Shaco, and Yorick.
  • 4,444 BE or 880 RP - This tier is specifically designated for Jhin, which fits the theme of the BE pricing.
  • 4,800 BE or 880 RP - Most of the champions in the game will cost this price.
  • 6,300 BE or 975 RP - This tier exists for characters that have been released within the past two seasons, and they will move to the tier above after surpassing that time period.
  • 7,800 BE or 975 RP - This will include any new champion that has been released in the past week.

This new system will reduce the total cost of all champions by over 140,000 BE and almost 15,000 RP. One drawback of this system is that some champion prices will increase. Some examples include Ryze, Kayle, Singed, and Twisted Fate. Their prices will increase to 4,800 BE, but will still remain 260 RP for people to purchase at a lower rate.

Additionally, any champion that has a visual or gameplay update will likely be increased in pricing tier, but Riot said they will provide information before the alteration in price.
