As the release of Overwatch 2 approaches, more information about its features has been released. While Overwatch 1's servers will shut down prior to its release, the entirety of its original cast will return, accompanied by at least three new heroes, maps, and gameplay options. Most notably, it will also employ a new battle pass system, which will have both free and premium options in lieu of purchasable loot boxes.

In an interview with Game Informer last week, Overwatch's Commercial Lead and Vice President, Jon Spector, spoke on the new Mythic Cyber Demon Genji Skin, part of an upcoming obtainable Premium Battle Pass feature. While the game will be free-to-play, the Overwatch 2 team relies heavily on Premium Battle Pass features--which is where the much-anticipated Mythic Skins come in.

The Mythic Skin will reportedly be available after reaching Tier 80 of the Premium Battle Pass system; the Genji Skin in particular will feature four separate customizable layers and different color schemes. "The guiding principle behind Mythics was asking the art team to outdo themselves and make something even cooler than Legendary Skins," Spector explained after emphasizing the necessity to incentivize the Battle Pass System.

Overwatch 2's director, Aaron Keller, also told Game Informer that the Mythic skins, which are an "investment" that take over a year to make, are a testament to the team wanting to "make players feel really good about investing money into the game." While new heroes will be unlockable through the free Battle Pass, the Premium Battle Pass, which will cost 1,000 Overwatch coins or $10, will allow players to unlock over 80 tiers of rewards, including the Mythic Skins. However, Spector also revealed that Battle Passes will expire after a certain period of time, and therefore these exclusive skins will not always be available as they may soon be replaced by newer rewards.

Overwatch 2 will be available for free on Oct. 4 for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
