What is Primal Reversion in Pokémon GO?

Primal Reversion, a game mechanic introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, will be coming to Pokémon GO during the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn of this year, Niantic announced yesterday.

It has been revealed that primal forms of the Generation III legendaries, Groudon and Kyogre, will be available to undergo this transformation for improvements in battle capabilities and appearance.

What is Primal Reversion in Pokémon GO?

In Pokémon GO, this feature will exhibit itself a bit differently than it did in the aforementioned games. Groudon and Kyogre caught during Primal Raids, which will occur at set times and will function similarly to normal Raid Battles, will be able to use Primal Reversion for new bonuses.

It is worth noting that these Primal Raids are exclusive to those who hold Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn tickets, and players without these tickets will be unable to access Primal Kyogre and Groudon, for now.

Groudon and Kyogre will require Primal Energy to use Primal Reversion, which can be received by defeating them in Primal Raids.

Primal Reversion for Kyogre will give players these benefits:

  • As the buddy Pokémon, players will get extra XP and candy from catching Water-, Bug- and Electric-type Pokémon.
  • When in the party, Water-, Bug- and Electric-type Pokémon will do additional damage during raids.

While Primal Reversion for Groudon will give players these benefits:

  • As the buddy Pokémon, players will get extra XP and candy from catching Fire-, Grass- and Ground-type Pokémon.
  • When in the party, Fire-, Grass- and Ground-type Pokémon will do additional damage during raids.

Primal Groudon and Kyogre will only remain in their Primal Forms for eight hours, returning to their original forms after. But, Primal Reversion can be used as long as the player has Primal Energy.

The more consistently players use Primal Reversion on their Kyogre and Groudon, they will see that it will increase in Primal Level, taking less Primal Energy to undergo this change.

The Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn - Las Vegas will start Feb. 18 and end Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT.
