Xerneas, in its grand return to Pokémon GO, is taking on a new blue appearance. For trainers with questions as to why, look no further.

As a part of Pokémon GO’s Evolving Stars event, Xerneas will be appearing in five-star raids from Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. to Thursday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. local time. The last time this generation six Pokémon was in the game was July 2021, so be sure to catch Xerneas during its limited-time return.

Why is Xerneas Blue in Pokémon GO?

Just before Xerneas’ return, trainers were able to go up against its counterpart, Yveltal in five-star raids from Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. to Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. local time.

Xerneas is a fairy-type Legendary Pokémon that resembles a stag. Known for its bright, golden antlers with rainbow crystals, there has been confusion on why Xerneas is seen having an all-blue appearance in Pokémon GO.

Similarly to Pokémon such as Darmanitan and Cherrim, Xerneas has different forms! The Life Pokémon formally has two “modes.” The appearance we are all familiar with, the golden antlers, is when Xerneas is in its “Active Mode.” Xerneas is in “Active Mode” when it is in battle or appearing in raids. When caught, it will switch to its blue, “Neutral Mode” in the menu. This mode signifies that Xerneas is recovering from battle.

In Pokémon GO, Xerneas will remain in its “Neutral Mode” when you make it your Buddy and, when taken out to battle, it will swtich into its vibrant "Active Mode."
