Some of the bigger changes to Overwatch 2 have been made with beginners in mind. Becoming a free-to-play title on all platforms will likely bring many new curious players. New requirements like completing a certain number of matches to get access to all the original heroes from the previous game are just one change. Overwatch 2's competitive ranking system and the process to getting ranked has been updated.

Unless you are a returning player transitioning with the same account many of the new player experience tutorials will need to be completed. For new players, 50 quick play matches are needed before you can try competitive play.

A default rank will not be given in Overwatch 2's competitive mode. Players will need to be assessed through either seven wins or 20 losses in competitive play. After that players can get ranked in either play in role queue or open queue matches. Role queue will require pre-made teams of one tank two damage and two support heroes rewarding players with individual rank based on role they play. Open will have no limits on who a player plays and they will receive a single open queue rank.

Overwatch 2's new ranking system can be compared to Valorant with different tiers starting at tier five to tier one. From there players will rank beyond to different groups going from Bronze to Grandmaster. Winning in competitive matches will reward players with competitive points which can be used to unlock items like golden weapons and player titles. Most of the points will be rewarded as the season wraps and the final ranking is determined.

Another change to ranking that aims to reflect consistency is a mechanic that will gradually decrease a player's rank the longer between ranked matches they play. This change is so that when rusty players come back to competitive matches, they can get caught up and quickly rank back up to their appropriate ranking.

Getting ranked is just one of the few changes Blizzard has made to Overwatch 2. Check out tips on how to unlock the new heroes like Junker Queen and Sojourn.
